Erasure Drawings: Summer of 2020

These drawings are made through a process of subtraction. Instead of a blank piece of paper they begin as something fully formed (a photo of a plant) and through digital erasure the image is dismantled, flattened, and transformed into something different. The process is similar to one developed by Max Ernst who would flatly paint over found photos and illustrations. Another inspiration is sculptor Arman who would submerge musical instruments and other objects in vats of concrete. Both of these artists used mass produced objects as their subject matter with a nod towards consumer culture. This series of drawings by contrast has nature as its subject matter, and are informed by the effects of climate change.

This series of drawings is dedicated to the summer of 2020. A seemingly end of days amid a summer of Covid 19 and political unrest.

Most of these drawings are for sale as Giclee prints on Esty.
